WELCOME TO THE PR PRESS
A LETTER FROM OUR FOUNDER
Irecently said on our social media that I feel the most in my element when I am working on Project Retail. Every curating appointment, every photo shoot, every early morning and late night working on the site or strategizing with our team gives me such a sense of purpose– you never knew something so challenging could be so fun.
One of the most frequent questions I get is what inspired me to start PR. I was entrepreneurship averse in college– I was ready for a summer of light travel and heavy relaxation before starting my job in September. But as everyone knows, our whole world changed last spring. Brand new college graduates always need a little time to find their place in the world, but as of March of 2020 nearly everyone on the planet was now trying to find where they belonged in a COVID-19 era.
Following the initial shock of the pandemic, something truly beautiful happened. People everywhere, no matter their age or job or talent, started to go out of their way to support their communities. I sat in awe as people stepped up and showed up for complete strangers in a way I had never seen before.
Ihad learned a lot about effective altruism in school, which is the idea that if you want to optimally contribute and help others with the time and resources you have, you should focus on causes that align with any talents you may have. So I don’t know about talent, but I at least had experience working in retail. I was also passionate about fashion, and knew I was going to go crazy without a project (the name is not a coincidence) for an entire summer. So I took all that and a check from my business school for an award I had received and started brainstorming how to help small retail businesses in my town. The idea grew and evolved and changed and changed again until it became what you see now. And I really don’t remember what my life was like without it.
Surprise, surprise, I have always loved fashion. Specifically, however, I have always loved fashion that is a little different. A little against the grain. There are some truly ridiculous (though brilliant) photos of second grade me rocking checkered dresses with striped stockings giving the world a masterclass in clashing prints. But that was how I always liked it, because it was my own. I let my gut lead when it came to style, and I loved the liberating feeling of following that instinct unconditionally.
When I was four, I got into a little scuffle with a minivan. One of the first things I said when I arrived at the hospital was, "those were... my favorite shoes." My father had to assure me that my clogs (yes, my CLOGS) would make a full recovery. And I love this story, because I wasn't overwhelmed by my situation– I was too busy being underwhelmed by the major lack of individualism I was afforded by a hospital gown get-up. I was ready to go back to feeling like myself, and that meant getting back to being the only four year old ever to call wooden clogs her favorite shoe.
Project Retail is small– we are what I often call a "baby business". We don't get a ton of orders, we don't have hoards of followers, we haven't gone viral (yet). But for that reason, every person that engages with us we remember. If you have ordered from us, I know your name by heart. When our team sees we got a new follower or email subscriber, we celebrate. When you work for a baby business, you truly feel every little victory, every small step forward. And our team can attest– it feels amazing.
What makes it better? Working with incredible people. Working with incredible businesses. Working for an incredible cause. Working in an industry that is always evolving in beautiful new ways– one that allows people to express themselves through color and pattern and silhouette. And I wanted us to share more of all that with you guys…
